Buick Century A/C Orifice Tube Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an Expansion Tube (Orifice) on Buick Century and Regal?
A: Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a recovery/recycling machine, raise and support the vehicle, disconnect the fitting, and the liquid line from the condenser outlet, cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant, remove the A/C orifice tube using the orifice remover, remove as much of any impacted residue as possible, if the system has a pressure switch near the orifice tube location, it should be removed prior to the next step, carefully apply heat with a heat gun (hair drier) approximately ¼ in. (6mm) from the dimples on the inlet pipe, do not overheat the pipe, while applying heat, use the extractor tool to grip the A/C orifice tube, use a turning motion, along with a push-pull motion, to loosen the impacted A/C orifice tube and remove it, install the A/C orifice tube with the shorter screen end in first, connect the line to the condenser outlet, then tighten, lower the vehicle, evacuate, charge and leak test the system. Metal chips, flakes or silvers found on the A/C orifice tube screen can usually be blown out with shop air once the tube is removed, replace the tube only if one or more of the conditions is noticed such as the plastic frame is broken, the brass A/C orifice tube is damaged or plugged, the screen material is torn, or the screen is plugged with fine or gritty materials. The use of special tools will be needed for this procedure, J-26549-C the orifice tool remover and J-26549-D or equivalent, and an extractor.
