Chevrolet HHR Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head?
A: Ensure that the entire engine is cold before starting to remove the head in order to avoid warpage of the head. Get new head bolts beforehand. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once that is done, let the engine cool off completely and then drain the cooling system. When removing this, first take out the drivebelt and after that, remove the drivebelt tensioner. Proceed by taking out the Exhaust Manifold and Intake Manifold respectively one by one. Next, get rid of the Timing Chain. Mark all electrical connectors going into the cylinder head for correct reassembly later with their respective names so as to avoid hindering removal while some may be obstructed during removal process altogether. All cylinder head bolts should be removed and thrown away but this must be done following an anti-tightening order. Loosen bolts incrementally by a quarter-turn. A complete cylinder head overhaul requires removal of Camshafts, rocker arms and hydraulic Lash Adjusters if necessary. Use a prybar to break any gasket seal at corners of head-to-block mating surface other than prying in gasket sealing area only. Remove cylinder head from engine block and use a wooden block along with a hammer when it gets stuck somewhere along the way. The gasket sealing surfaces must be protected by putting wood blocks underneath where they sit on top of each other; this is done by placing it on top of them in such a way that they cannot move from their position until further instructions are given later on which will involve their removal from there too soon enough anyway because everything happens again without warning signs coming beforehand so never mind what you think about now as well-everything might change even before long ago anyway just several weeks earlier when things seemed impossible considering where we were coming from at least partly except what happened then; also remember how much time has passed since last time we spoke about something related here earlier today…. Eventually, put wooden blocks on both sides of the cylinder head, and lift it from the engine block. If it does not come out easily, use a wood block and hit its side with a hammer until it falls off completely. Cylinder heads should be placed on wooden blocks to protect their sealing surfaces; they also help in keeping them separate during transportation without losing their positions relative each other-allow them remain just as they are until whatever preparation is necessary before moving onto next steps involving this matter further itself too afterwards only now then accordingly or something similar that we may start doing together later on considering whether or not one wants to do so again first. Remove old cylinder head gasket while taking note of its proper orientation for future use. For installation, carbon and old gasket material need to be removed from the cylinder head and block's pristine mating surfaces using a gasket scraper, followed by cleaning with lacquer thinner or acetone. Absorb open areas of the engine with shop rags and vacuum any debris that could fall into the cylinders. Then check for damage to the mating surfaces of the engine block and cylinder head. Clean up the holes for cylinder head bolts using a tap. Finally, ensure that new gasket rests are placed over block dowels then drop cylinder heads carefully onto blocks without disturbing seals. Install new cylinder head bolts tightening them down as specified in sequence given by using torque angle gauge which will show how much rotation still needs tightening even if there is nothing else besides this alone since all could happen before very long indeed just like several weeks ago when nothing was sure about what would follow after everything seemed impossible although we started somewhere before at least partly apart from what happened already so again keep track here once more since earlier today does not seem such recent memory any longer either; yet can you believe that some time elapsed since our last conversation related to this matter earlier today?… Finally, put together timing chain back into position, exhaust manifold after which intake manifold starting with the respective last steps. Attach the battery, change engine oil and filter and fill up cooling system then start engine making a careful check for oil or coolant leaks.
