Q:
How do I remove and replace the control arm? Posted by Customer
A:
For 2009 and earlier models, the removal of the control arm involves marking the relationship of the control arm to the subframe while the vehicle is at normal ride height. After loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands, the wheel is removed. If equipped, the ABS wheel speed sensor and harness are disconnected or removed from the control arm. The balljoint is separated from the steering knuckle, and the control arm-to-subframe fasteners are removed to separate the control arm from the subframe. During inspection, the control arm and bushings are checked for wear and distortion, and any damaged parts are replaced. Installation is the reverse of removal, with all fasteners tightened to the torque specifications, and a front wheel alignment check and adjustment is recommended if necessary. For 2010 and later models with GNB front suspension, the removal process involves loosening the front wheel lug nuts, raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands, and removing the wheel. The height sensor and wiring harness are disconnected from the control arm, followed by the removal of rear control arm bushing-to-subframe fasteners, control arm-to-strut yoke nut and bolt, and the nut and lower control arm front pivot bolt, and finally removing the control arm itself. Installation is the reverse of removal with new fasteners used and properly tightened. For 2010 and later models with GNA front suspension, the removal process includes loosening the front wheel lug nuts, raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands, and removing the wheel. The ABS wheel speed sensor wiring harness is detached from the steering knuckle, and the nut and steering knuckle-to-balljoint pinch bolt are removed. The balljoint is then separated from the steering knuckle, and the control arm rear bushing-to-subframe fasteners and the nut and lower control arm front pivot bolt are removed. The control arm is finally removed, and installation follows the reverse of the removal process with new fasteners and proper tightening. For front bushing replacement, special tools are required, and it's advised to have the control arm taken to have this bushing replaced due to the complexity. For rear bushing removal, the control arm is mounted in a vise, and the bushing-to-control arm bolt is removed, followed by the removal of the bushing from the control arm shaft. Installation involves installing the new bushing with a new bolt and properly tightening it.
