Q:
What is the importance of the serpentine drive belt in the overall operation of the engine and its components? Posted by Customer
A:
A single serpentine drive belt is located at the front of the engine and plays an important role in the overall operation of the engine and its components. Due to its function and material makeup, the belt is prone to wear and should be periodically inspected. The serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. With the engine off, open the hood and use your fingers (and a flashlight, if necessary) to move along the belt, checking for cracks and separation of the belt plies. Also, check for fraying and glazing, which gives the belt a shiny appearance. Both sides of the belt should be inspected, which means you will have to twist the belt to check the underside. Check the ribs on the underside of the belt. They should all be the same depth, with none of the surfaces uneven. The tension of the belt is checked visually. Locate the belt tensioner at the front of the engine under the air conditioning compressor on the right (passenger) side, then find the tensioner operating marks located on the side of the tensioner. If the indicator mark is outside of the operating range, the belt should be replaced. To replace the belt, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure that requires disconnecting the battery. Rotate the tensioner (clockwise on 2.0/2.2-liter four-cylinder engines, counterclockwise on V6 and 2.3-liter Quad-4 engines) to release belt tension. The tensioner will swing down once the tension of the belt is released. Remove the belt from the auxiliary components and carefully release the tensioner. Note: On 1994 and later V6 models, it will be necessary to remove the engine mount attached to the front of the engine before the belt can be completely removed. Support the engine with a jack placed under the oil pan (be sure to place a wood block between the jack head and the oil pan), raise the engine slightly, and remove the engine mount. Route the new belt over the various pulleys, again rotating the tensioner to allow the belt to be installed, then release the belt tensioner. Note: Most models have a drive belt routing decal on the belt guard to help during drive belt installation.
