Q:
How to diagnose and replace the cooling fans in Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo? Posted by Customer
A:
These models feature two radiator fans situated side-by-side behind the radiator, operated at Low or High speeds based on engine requirements and conditions by the PCM and three relays. Fuses in the engine compartment's fuse/relay box protect the fans. If both fans fail to work and the engine overheats, check the fuses for continuity and replace any blown ones. If the fuses are intact, test each fan motor separately by providing battery power directly to the terminals using fused jumper wires; replace any malfunctioning fan motor. If the motors are functional but the fans still don't engage when the engine is hot, the fan relays might be defective, so test them individually. If no obvious issues are found, it's best to have the radiator fan system diagnosed. To remove the radiator fans, first disconnect the battery's negative terminal, drain the cooling system, and remove the air filter housing and engine mount strut(s) from the top of the engine. Disconnect the fan motor harness electrical connectors and remove any attached hoses or wiring harnesses. Next, disconnect the upper transaxle cooler line from the left side of the radiator and remove the radiator hose from the right side. Take off the radiator and condenser mounting brackets and then remove the fan shroud assembly by lifting it out of the engine compartment. Loosen and remove the fan blade from the motor shaft by turning the fastener in the opposite direction of the arrow on the fan blade. Protect good motors with tape when one of them is removed. Center-punch the rivets securing the fan motor to the fan shroud from the rear and drill them out with a 1/4-inch drill bit. Tap out the rivets using a punch and carefully remove the motor. Before installation, acquire replacement fasteners, including bolts, washers, and locking-type nuts. Install the new fan motor with the bolts from the front and the locknuts from the rear, tightening them to the specified torque. Prepare the new fan blade by heating the hub under hot tap water and then swiftly place it onto the motor shaft and install the drive plate, ensuring the fastener is fully seated into the fan blade hub slots. Verify that the fan blade is correctly installed, and complete the remaining installation, ensuring all fasteners are securely tightened. Finally, refill the cooling system and check the transaxle fluid level.
