Q:
What is the importance of driveaxle boots and how should they be maintained on Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
A:
The CV boots are crucial as they block dirt, water, and foreign material from infiltrating and damaging the constant velocity (CV) joints. Oil and grease can lead to premature deterioration of the boot material, hence washing the boots with soap and water is recommended. The outer CV boot, which constantly pivots back and forth following the steering action of the front hub, wears out sooner and should be regularly inspected. It's also important to check the boots for tears, cracks, and loose clamps. This includes inspecting the inner and outer CV boots for loose clamps, cracks, or signs of leaking lubricant. All-wheel-drive models have CV boots at the rear too. If there are any signs of cracks or leaking lubricant, replacements are necessary.

Q:
How to replace CV joint boots for Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo? Posted by Customer
A:
If the CV joint boots need to be replaced, it is important to explore all options before starting the job. Complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis, which can save time and effort. Before disassembling the vehicle, it is recommended to check the cost and availability of parts. To replace the inner CV boot, the driveaxle should be placed in a vise lined with rags to protect the axleshaft. The CV joint should be checked for excessive play and smooth operation. If the boot is torn, the joint should be disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for damage. The process involves removing the boot retaining clamps, sliding the housing and bushing off the spider assembly, and removing the spider assembly from the axleshaft. The boot and stop ring should be slid off the axleshaft, and the old grease should be cleaned out of the housing and spider assembly. Each bearing should be carefully removed, cleaned, and inspected. CV joint grease should be applied to the inner bearing surfaces, and the bearing should be slid over them. The boot, stop ring, spider bearing, spider retaining ring, and spider assembly should be reinstalled. The housing should be packed with grease, and the boot should be seated in the housing and axle seal grooves. The CV joint should be adjusted to the proper length, and the boot clamps should be secured. To replace the outer CV boot, the boot retaining clamps should be cut off, and the boot should be slid back. The ends of the internal snap-ring should be spread apart, and the CV joint should be slid off the shaft. The inner race should be pressed down to remove a ball bearing, and the balls should be pried out of the cage. The inner race and cage should be tilted and rotated to remove them from the outer race. The components should be cleaned and inspected for damage. The assembly should be reinstalled by lowering it into the housing, rotating it, and pressing the balls into the cage windows. A new snap-ring should be installed, and grease should be applied through the splined hole. The CV joint assembly should be positioned on the driveaxle and driven onto it with a soft-face hammer. The boot should be seated and the retaining clamp should be installed. Finally, the boot clamps should be tightened.

Q:
How to remove and replace the inner and outer CV joint and boot of a driveaxle for Chevrolet Equinox,GMC Terrain and Pontiac Torrent? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and replace the inner CV joint and boot of a CV axle, start by removing the CV axle from the vehicle and mounting it in a vise lined with wood or rags. Remove the boot clamps and slide the boot back from the inner CV joint, marking the relationship of the tri-pod to the outer race. Use a center punch to mark the tri-pod and axleshaft for proper reassembly. Spread the ends of the stop-ring apart, remove the retainer clip from the axleshaft, and use a hammer and brass punch to drive the tri-pod joint from the CV axle. Remove the stop-ring from the axleshaft and discard it. Clean the old grease from the outer race and tri-pod bearing assembly, inspecting for abnormal wear. To reassemble, slide the clamps and boot onto the axleshaft, install a new stop-ring, place the tri-pod on the shaft, and install a new bearing retainer clip. Apply CV joint grease, slide the boot into place, equalize the pressure, tighten the clamps, and install the CV axle assembly. For the outer CV joint and boot, remove the boot clamps and dislodge the outer CV joint from the axleshaft by striking the housing with a soft-face hammer. Remove and discard the bearing retainer clip and slide the boot off the axleshaft. Clean all components and inspect for wear. To reassemble, slide a new sealing boot clamp and boot onto the axleshaft, place a new bearing retainer clip, add grease to the outer CV joint assembly housing and sealing boot, align the splines and drive the CV joint onto the axleshaft. Position the CV joint, equalize the pressure, tighten the clamps, and install the CV axle.
