- Q:How do you remove the steering gear boots? Posted by Customer
- A:To remove the rack and pinion boots, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels and then disconnect the tie-rod ends from the tie-rods. Cut off the boot clamps and discard them. Take note of the alignment marks on the boots and rack and pinion. Remove the boots. To install new boots, start by placing a new clamp on the inner end of the boot. Apply multi-purpose grease to the groove on the tie-rod and the mounting grooves on the rack and pinion. Align the marks on the boot and rack and pinion and slide the new boot onto the rack and pinion housing. Ensure the boot is not twisted and tighten the new inner clamp with a clamp-crimping tool. Install and tighten the outer clamps. Reinstall the tie-rod ends. Finally, have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
