The camshaft bearing caps are marked with numbers and letters, with a raised arrow indicating the front of the engine. Special timing chain holding tools (EN 48383-2 and EN 48383-3) are required for this procedure; without them, the timing chain cover must be removed to ensure proper chain attachment to the lower sprockets. Begin by disconnecting the battery cable, removing the valve covers, power steering fluid reservoir, lower intake manifold for 2008 and earlier models, Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors, camshaft position actuator solenoid valves, and the high-pressure fuel pump for 2009 and later models (if working on the left side camshafts). Rotate the engine to position the camshafts with the flats facing up. Check camshaft end play, holding the camshafts with a wrench and loosening the actuator bolts. Install the timing chain holding tool (EN 48313) to secure the timing chain and sprockets, then remove the camshaft actuator bolts and detach the actuators. Store the camshaft bearing caps in a labeled box, and remove the caps' bolts gradually in reverse of the tightening sequence. Inspect the camshafts for wear and measure the bearing journals and lobes. Clean and inspect the camshaft bearings in the block. Lubricate the camshaft and install it, ensuring proper orientation, and tighten the bearing cap bolts in the specified order. Repeat for the other cylinder head camshafts. Finally, complete the remaining installation steps in reverse, including changing the oil and installing a new oil filter before starting the engine.
