Q:
How to conduct a thorough check of the air intake, air cleaner, and filter? Posted by Customer
A:
At specified intervals, it's essential to conduct a thorough check of the air intake, air cleaner, and filter, ensuring all clamps and air cleaner cover retaining nuts are securely fastened to prevent the entry of dirty air into the engine. The air filter is positioned within the air cleaner housing on top of the throttle body for four-cylinder engines and within the remote air cleaner housing located on the left side of the engine compartment for V6-powered models. To replace the filter on four-cylinder models, unscrew the flanged hex nuts securing the top of the air cleaner assembly and remove the top plate, exercising caution to avoid dropping anything into the throttle body. Lift out the air filter element and wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing clean. Insert the new filter properly into the housing, ensuring it seats correctly at the bottom. Reattach the air cleaner top plate and tighten the nuts finger-tight. For V6 air filter replacement, locate the air filter housing in the rear compartment's left side, remove the securing nut on the top cover, lift off the cover, and take out the air filter element. Additionally, the four-cylinder engine features a thermostatic air cleaner (Thermac) designed to regulate inlet air temperature using heated air and intake manifold vacuum. The Thermac assembly, found within the air cleaner's long snorkel, can draw air from outside the engine compartment or from a heat stove around the exhaust manifold based on temperature conditions. Ensure proper connections for vacuum hoses between the intake manifold and the temperature sensor, as well as the temperature sensor and the vacuum motor. Also, confirm the flexible air hose between the Thermac and the exhaust manifold is linked to the heat stove tube under the air cleaner snorkel. To check the vacuum motor damper door operation, remove the outside air duct from the snorkel and observe the damper door through the snorkel's mouth. The damper door should be open to outside air when the engine is cold, gradually closing when the engine starts and reopening as it warms up, providing outside air intake. Depending on ambient temperature, it may take 10 to 15 minutes for the damper door to fully open; reconnecting the snorkel air duct and driving the vehicle can expedite this check.

Q:
How to remove and install an air filter? Posted by Customer
A:
On the four-cylinder engine, remove the flanged hex nuts on the air cleaner top plate. Remove the top plate. Remove the old air filter. Wipe out the inside of the air cleaner housing. Install the new air filter. Install the top plate. Tighten the flanged hex nuts securely. The air filter for the V6 engine is located inside the cylindrical air cleaner housing at the left front corner of the engine compartment. Remove the top nut, lift out the old filter, wipe out the housing and install the new filter.

Q:
How can the air filter be checked in the 1984 Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the air filter, hold it up to strong sunlight or place a flashlight or droplight on the inside of the filter. If you can see light coming through the paper element, the filter is all right. Check all the way around the filter.
