- A:The Secondary Air Injection system plays a crucial role in reducing emissions during cold starts. It consists of an AIR pump that brings fresh air into the exhaust manifold when the PCM activates the AIR pump relay and AIR shut-off valve relay. The shut-off valve is part of an assembly that includes a system pressure sensor. Filtered air is transported from the engine's air filter housing to the pump, which is located on the front of the engine, to the right of the starter. From there, it goes to the shut-off/pressure-sensor assembly, which is mounted on the exhaust manifold. To properly check the AIR system, it is recommended to use a scan tool, as it allows for a more comprehensive inspection.
