Q:
What are the ways to check the operation of the water pump and what are the signs of a defective water pump? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage due to overheating. There are three ways to check the operation of the water pump while it's installed on the engine, and if it is found to be defective, it should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. In the event of a water pump seal failure, coolant will leak out at the left front of the engine, between the cylinder head and the coolant crossover housing. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound while the engine is running, and shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down when the engine is off. It is important not to mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. A quick check of water pump performance can be done by putting the heater on, as a corroded impeller in the pump may prevent efficient circulation of hot coolant to the heater core.

Q:
How do I remove and install a water pump? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the water pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, drain the coolant and remove the water pump drivebelt, which is located behind the coolant crossover assembly. You'll need to remove the drivebelt shield to access it. Next, remove the air filter housing and the secondary AIR check valve bracket from the coolant crossover housing, if equipped. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing and remove the water pump bypass hose from the coolant crossover assembly. Remove the water pump cover and use a water pump removal tool to rotate it clockwise and remove it from the housing. Clean the mating surfaces of the coolant crossover housing and the cover to remove any residue. To install the new water pump, start by placing a new o-ring in the groove of the coolant crossover housing. Then, install the new water pump and align the slotted tangs with the housing. Use the special tool to lock the water pump by turning it counterclockwise to the specified torque. Install a new o-ring in the groove of the water pump cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Finally, reinstall the engine components in the reverse order of removal, making sure to tighten the fasteners securely. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for any leaks.
