Q:
What are the signs and consequences of a failure in the water pump on Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage as it causes overheating. These models have a water pump that is driven by the drivebelt. Water pumps are typically equipped with weep or vent holes, which can leak coolant if there is a failure in the pump seal. To check for leaks, a flashlight and small mirror can be used to locate the hole on the water pump. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound while the pump is running, and shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down with the drivebelt removed. It is important not to mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. Even if a pump shows no outward signs of a problem, such as noise or leakage, it may still need to be replaced. The only sure way to determine this is through removal for close examination. A quick check of water pump performance is to turn on the heater. If the pump is failing, it may not be able to efficiently circulate hot water to the heater core as it should.

Q:
How do I remove the water pump on Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR,Saturn ION and Pontiac G5? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the water pump, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the air intake duct and air filter housing. Loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and drain the cooling system. If the vehicle has an automatic transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold. Remove the plug from the bottom of the water pump housing to drain the coolant. Next, remove the thermostat housing and its transfer pipe, along with the hoses connected to them. If equipped, remove the coolant heater and its mounting bolt. Depending on the model and engine, you may need to remove the exhaust heat shield, PCV system vent tube and hose, or catalytic converter. Disconnect any electrical connectors or harnesses that interfere with access. Unbolt the bracket for the underhood fuse/relay box if necessary. Remove the three bolts securing the thermostat housing to the engine, then separate the housing and transfer pipe from the water pump. Remove the right inner fender splash shield and unbolt the cover over the water pump sprocket from the engine front cover. Install a special holding tool onto the water pump sprocket to prevent movement. Remove the remaining water pump sprocket bolts and the bolts attaching the water pump to the engine block. Gently tap the water pump with a soft-faced hammer if it is stuck. Clean the bolt threads, threaded holes, and sealing surfaces, removing any corrosion or old gasket material. Finally, remove the sealing ring from the water pump. To install the new water pump, insert a new sealing ring into the pump and align the water pump sprocket with the water pump using a guide pin. Install the water pump mounting bolts and sprocket bolts, tightening them to the proper torque specifications. Install the water pump access cover, thermostat housing, and water pipe, tightening the bolts to the correct torque specifications. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of the removal process. Remember to refill the cooling system and reconnect the battery. Finally, operate the engine to check for any leaks.
