What is the procedure for replacing the valve springs and seals for the 1995 Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer

Q:
Can broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals be replaced without removing the cylinder head in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Broken valve springs and defective Valve Stem Oil Seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head. Two special tools and a compressed air source are normally required to perform this operation. If compressed air isn't available, a length of nylon rope can be used to keep the valves from falling into the cylinder during this procedure. To begin, remove the spark plug from the affected cylinder and the ignition coil assembly. Then, remove the camshaft(s), lifters, and housing(s). Next, turn the crankshaft until the piston in the affected cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. Thread an adapter into the spark plug hole and connect an air hose from a compressed air source to it. Apply compressed air to the cylinder to hold the valves in place. If compressed air is not available, position the piston at a point approximately 45-degrees before top dead center on the compression stroke and feed a long piece of nylon rope through the spark plug hole. Rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation until slight resistance is felt. Stuff shop rags into the cylinder head holes adjacent to the valves to prevent parts and tools from falling into the engine. Use a valve spring compressor to compress the spring and remove the keepers. Remove the retainer, valve spring, Valve Stem Oil Seal, and rotator. Inspect the valve stem for damage and check for eccentric movement. Move the valve up and down in the guide to ensure it doesn't bind. Reapply air pressure or rotate the crankshaft to retain the valve in the closed position. Reinstall the valve rotator, lubricate the valve stem, and install a new Valve Stem Oil Seal. Install the spring, retainer, and keepers. Disconnect the air hose or remove the rope. Finally, install the camshaft(s), lifters, and housing(s), and then start and run the engine, checking for oil leaks and unusual sounds.
