Q:
How to remove and install knock sensors in Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. For a 4.3L V6 engine, the knock sensor is located on the rear part of the engine block, to the left of the distributor. On 1996 through 2000 models, the knock sensor is a threaded unit that is screwed into the block. On 2001 and later models, the knock sensor is in the same location but is bolted to the block. Remove the engine cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the knock sensor. Remove the knock sensor from the block. On 1996 through 2000 models, simply unscrew the knock sensor with a socket. On 2001 through 2014 models, remove the knock sensor mounting bolt. On 2018 and later 4.3L V6 engines, there are two knock sensors, one on each cylinder bank just below the exhaust manifolds. Remove the knock sensor center bolt and remove the sensor(s) from the block. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the knock sensor or the knock sensor mounting bolt to the specific torque. For 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L V8 engines, the knock sensor is located on the right side of the block, just ahead of the starter motor. Raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Disconnect the electrical connector from the knock sensor. Unscrew and remove the knock sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the knock sensor to the specific torque. For 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines, the two knock sensors are located on top of the engine, underneath the intake manifold. You have to remove the intake manifold to access either knock sensor. Remove the engine cover. Remove the intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical connector(s) from the knock sensor(s). Unscrew and remove the knock sensor(s). Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the knock sensor(s) to the specific torque. In all cases, do NOT use thread sealant or thread locking compound on the threads of the knock sensor or the knock sensor mounting bolt. Over- or under-tightening the knock sensor or the knock sensor mounting bolt will affect knock sensor performance, which might affect the PCM's ability to prevent knocking.
