Q:
How to diagnose and replace the brake light switch on Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon? Posted by Customer
A:
The brake light switch, which is located on a bracket along with the Traction Control/Cruise Control switch, activates the brake lights at the rear of the vehicle when the pedal is depressed. To access the switch, the left-side under-dash panel and the heater/air conditioning duct need to be removed. If the brake lights are not working, the fuse should be checked first. If the fuse is fine, the voltage to the switch on the feed wire should be checked. If there is no voltage, the wire between the switch and the fuse box should be repaired. If voltage is present, the brake pedal should be depressed to check for voltage at the output wire terminal. If there is no voltage, the switch should be replaced. If voltage is present, the brake light wires at the tail light housings should be checked for power with the brake pedal depressed. If there is no voltage, the circuit between the switch and the brake lights should be repaired. If voltage is present, a bad ground should be checked by using a jumper wire connected to a good ground and probing the ground wire terminal at the tail light connector. If the brake lights turn on, the ground circuit should be repaired by following the ground wire from the tail light housing. It is important to note that while the brake light bulbs could be burned out, it is unlikely that all of them would be. To remove the switch, the left-side under-dash panel and the heater/air conditioning duct should be removed if they haven't been already. The electrical connector should be unplugged and the switch should be rotated counterclockwise to remove it from the bracket. For installation, the new switch should be installed in the reverse order of removal, but for 2007 and later models, adjustment is required. The switch should be rotated counterclockwise until it releases, and then the brake pedal should be pulled firmly rearward and kept in that position. The switch should be pushed towards the pedal until the plunger contacts the pedal, and then continued until the switch body just touches the pedal. The switch should then be rotated clockwise until a click is heard. The adjustment is correct when there is about 0.028-inch between the end of the switch and the contact point on the pedal, with no pressure on the pedal.
