How to remove and install a solenoid in a starter motor on Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer

After removing the starter/solenoid unit, disconnect the connector strap from the solenoid MOTOR terminal. Remove the two screws securing the solenoid housing to the end-frame assembly. Twist the solenoid clockwise to disengage the flange key and withdraw the solenoid. Remove the nuts and washers from the solenoid terminals, unscrew the two solenoid end-cover retaining screws and washers, and pull off the end-cover. Unscrew the nut washer from the battery terminal on the end cover and remove the terminals. Remove the resistor bypass terminal and contactor. Remove the motor connector strap terminal and solder a new terminal in position. Use a new battery terminal and install it to the end-cover. Install the bypass terminal and contactor. Install the end-cover and the remaining terminal nuts. Install the solenoid to the starter motor by checking that the return spring is in position on the plunger, then insert the solenoid body into the drive housing and turn the body counterclockwise to engage the flange key. Install the two solenoid securing screws and connect the MOTOR connector strap.

Install the two solenoid screws and connect the MOTOR connector strap.

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the starter motor. Disconnect the strap from the solenoid to the starting motor (M) terminal. Remove the two screws which secure the solenoid to the starter motor. Twist the solenoid in a clockwise direction to disengage the flange from the starter body (Remove the solenoid housing from the starter by twisting it clockwise). To install, first make sure the return spring is in position on the plunger, then insert the solenoid body into the starter housing and turn the solenoid counterclockwise to engage the flange. Install the two solenoid screws and connect the motor strap.

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: On models equipped with the Theftlock audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Note: On 1996 3.4L models and all 1998 and later models, the starter solenoid is not serviceable. If it's bad, the whole starter must be replaced. Remove the starter motor. Disconnect the strap from the solenoid to the starter motor terminal. Remove the screws which secure the solenoid to the starter motor. Twist the solenoid in a clockwise direction to disengage the flange from the starter body. Installation is the reverse of removal.
