Q:
How do you remove the thermostat for Chevrolet S10? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the thermostat, start by draining about 1 gallon of coolant from the radiator until the level is below the thermostat housing. Then, remove the air intake duct and disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat cover. Next, remove the bolts and lift off the cover, tapping it with a soft-face hammer if necessary to break the gasket seal. Take note of how the thermostat is installed, and then remove it. Make sure to use a replacement thermostat with the correct opening temperature. If a gasket was used, use a scraper or putty knife to remove any old gasket material and sealant from the mating surfaces. To install the new thermostat, ensure the correct end faces out, with the spring directed toward the engine. Use a new rubber gasket or apply a bead of RTV to the groove in the coolant outlet sealing surface if no gasket was used. Carefully position the cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque, being careful not to over-tighten and risk cracking or distorting the cover. Reattach the radiator hose and tighten the clamp, and consider checking and replacing hoses and clamps at this time. Finally, refill the system, run the engine, and carefully check for any leaks.

Q:
How to remove and replace a thermostat in a Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
A:
The thermostat is a restriction valve actuated by a thermostatic element, mounted inside a housing on the engine. It is designed to open and close at predetermined temperatures to allow coolant to warm-up the engine or cool it. To remove the thermostat for replacement or testing, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner for better working access. Drain the coolant into a suitable container for disposal. It is not necessary to drain the coolant from the engine. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing and the smaller by-pass hose which leads to the front cover. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and the housing from the engine. As the housing is lifted away from the engine, the thermostat becomes visible. Late model vehicles may have a TVS switch installed in the thermostat housing. If this is the case, disconnect each of the vacuum hoses on the switch and then unscrew the switch from the housing. After lifting the thermostat housing from the engine, the thermostat will be visible and can be removed from the engine. Note how the thermostat sits in the recess, as it must be replaced in this same position. Before installation, use a gasket scraper or putty knife to carefully remove all traces of the old gasket on the thermostat housing and the engine sealing surface. Do not allow the gasket particles to drop down into the intake manifold. Place a 1/3 inch bead of RTV or equivalent sealer around the sealing surface on the engine and place the thermostat into its recess. Immediately place the thermostat housing with sealer and a new gasket into position and torque-tighten the attaching bolts. Where applicable, install the TVS switch and vacuum hoses. Connect the upper radiator hose and by-pass hose. Connect the negative battery cable and fill the radiator with the proper amount of antifreeze and water. With the radiator cap removed, start the engine and run, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot. When this hose is hot, the thermostat should be in the open position. At this point, add more coolant if necessary to reach the top of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows are aligned with the overflow hose.
