Q:
What are the steps involved in valve reconditioning procedures? Posted by Customer
A:
Valve reconditioning procedures involve a series of steps for different engine types. To start, remove the cylinder head and place it on a clean, well-lit surface. Remove valve seals from intake valve guides and discard them. Remove the valves and arrange them numerically for reinstallation. Clean all carbon deposits from combustion chambers, piston heads, and valves using a soft wire brush, taking care not to scratch valve seats and faces. Using a suitable valve spring compressor, compress the valve spring to remove valve spring cap keys and caps. Release the tool to remove the spring cap. Clean any carbon and gum deposits from valve guide bores using Reamer J-8101. Inspect the valve faces and seats for pits or damage, and if necessary, reface them to a 45° angle. Ream valve guides if there's excessive clearance with 0.006 and 0.010 reamers. Lightly lap valves into seats with fine grinding compound, ensuring smooth and true surfaces. Test valves for concentricity and tight seating by coating the valve face with Prussian blue and checking the seating pattern. Remove any burrs from the valve stem, polish it with crocus cloth, and lubricate valve stems and guides with clean engine oil before reinstalling the valves. Install new intake valve seals (no exhaust valve seals are required). Use an installation tool to properly position the seals over the guides. Install valve springs with the closely wound coil towards the cylinder head (exhaust valve springs on 8-350 and all springs on V6 can be installed with either end up). Install the spring caps and keepers and then reassemble the cylinder head. For Chevrolet engines, begin by removing the rocker arm nuts, balls, and arms and use a valve spring compressor to remove keepers, spring caps, and other related components. For Pontiac engines, remove the rocker arms and use a valve spring compressor to remove valve locks, caps, springs, and other parts. For Oldsmobile engines, remove valve keys and oil seals, then the valves. Install new oil seals over valve stems using appropriate tools. Recondition valve seats by narrowing them to the specified width, and if necessary, ream valve guide bores for oversize valves. When reconditioning valves and valve seats, clean carbon deposits, narrow valve seats, and ensure proper stem height and clearance. Inspect various components for wear, damage, or other issues, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications for valve reconditioning. Properly gauge valve stem clearance, and after installing valve keys, tap each valve stem end to seat valve rotators and keys. Gauge all valves to ensure correct stem height, and replace any valves that are too short.
