A:
The lower control arm removal involves disconnecting the stabilizer bar and shock absorber, removing inner lower control arm nuts and bolts, and safely lowering the control arm to relieve spring pressure. Q:
How do you remove and install the upper and lower control arms? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the upper control arm, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Support the lower control arm with a jack or jackstand and unbolt the bracket for the wheel speed sensor harness if necessary. Disconnect the upper balljoint from the steering knuckle and remove the control arm-to-frame nuts and bolts, making sure to record the position of any alignment shims. Detach the control arm from the vehicle. To install the upper control arm, position it on the frame and install the bolts and nuts, along with any alignment shims that were removed. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque. Insert the balljoint stud into the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to the specified torque, then install a new cotter pin. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Finally, take the vehicle to an alignment shop to have the front-end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. To remove the lower control arm, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the lower control arm and remove the coil spring. Remove the cotter pin and back off the lower control arm balljoint stud nut two turns, then break the balljoint loose from the steering knuckle and remove the nut. Remove the control arm from the vehicle. To install the lower control arm, insert the balljoint stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the nut to the specified torque, and install a new cotter pin. If necessary, tighten the nut slightly to align a slot in the nut with the hole in the balljoint stud. Install the coil spring and the lower control arm pivot bolts and nuts, but don't completely tighten them at this time. Connect the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications.
