Q:
How to remove a Brake Booster for Cadillac CTS? Posted by Customer
A:
To perform an operating check on the brake system, start by depressing the brake pedal multiple times with the engine off to ensure there is no change in the pedal reserve distance. Then, depress the pedal and start the engine, noting if the pedal goes down slightly, indicating normal operation. For an airtightness check, start the engine and turn it off after a minute or two. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times, observing if the pedal goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after subsequent depressions, indicating an airtight booster. Alternatively, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running and then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. If removal of the power unit is necessary, it is recommended to use special tools and have a new or factory-rebuilt unit installed. To remove the unit, start by removing the driver's side insulator panel and disconnecting the electrical connector to the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) sensor. Remove the booster pushrod retaining clip or nut, depending on the model year, and disconnect the pushrod from the brake pedal. Remove any additional components, such as the cross brace or clutch master cylinder, if applicable. Remove the coolant expansion tank and the master cylinder from the booster. Remove the cowl panel to access the locking tab on the brake booster and disconnect the brake booster check valve and vacuum hose. Install a special tool or equivalent to the brake booster studs and release the booster from the mounting flange by depressing the locking tab and rotating the booster counterclockwise. Once free, carefully pull the booster forward and separate the pushrod from the booster. Lift the booster away from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. To install the booster, place it into position and insert the pushrod until the pushrod retaining clip clicks in place. Rotate the booster clockwise until the locking tab locks into the mounting flange. Install the master cylinder, reconnect the vacuum hose and check valve, and install the booster pushrod, retaining clip, and washer or nut to the brake pedal. Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps and carefully testing the operation of the brakes before normal use.
