Q:
How to CV joint boot replacement? Posted by Customer
A:
When dealing with CV Boot replacement, it's advisable to explore all available options before initiating the task. Complete rebuilt drive axles can be obtained on an exchange basis, saving both time and effort. Regardless of the chosen approach, it's crucial to assess the cost and availability of parts before commencing vehicle disassembly. To replace the inner CV Boot, start by cutting off the boot retaining clamps and sliding the housing off the spider assembly. Move the boot toward the center of the drive axle, and mark the relationship of the tri-pot assembly to the outer race. Spread the ends of the stop-ring apart and slide it towards the center of the shaft. Proceed to slide the spider assembly back to expose the retaining ring and pry it off. Remove the spider from the drive axle, making sure to hold the bearings in place using tape or a cloth if necessary. In cases where the spider sticks to the shaft, gently tap it off with a hammer and brass punch. Finally, slide off the stop-ring and boot from the axle shaft, clean the housing and spider assembly, and replace any worn bearings or components as needed. The assembly process includes applying CV joint grease, installing the bearing blocks (for square tri-pot bearing designs), and securing the boot clamps with special pliers. For the outer CV joint, start by cutting off the band retaining the boot to the shaft and sliding the boot toward the center. Use snap-ring pliers to spread the snap-ring ears, allowing the joint to slide off the shaft. Remove the old boot and carefully remove the ball bearings one at a time by tilting the inner race and cage. Clean all components with solvent and inspect them for any damage or wear. Reassembly involves reinstalling the bearings into the cage windows, aligning the inner race with the cage, and using snap-ring pliers to secure a new snap-ring. Grease should be applied through the splined hole, and a wooden dowel can be used to force the grease into the joint. Reattach the small clamp and boot on the drive axle, filling the boot with grease up to the end of the axle. Position the CV joint assembly on the drive axle, align the splines, and use a soft-face hammer to drive the joint onto the drive axle until the snap-ring is seated in the groove. Ensure that the boot is properly seated in the groove and install the retaining clamps. Equalize the pressure in the boot before securing the boot clamps with special pliers, which are readily available at most auto parts stores.
