For floor shift models, the procedure involves positioning the shift lever into Neutral, disconnecting the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever in the engine compartment, removing the U-clip retainer, squeezing the tangs on the cable housing to release it from the bracket, and then removing the cable from the transaxle bracket. In the passenger compartment, the console trimplate is removed, along with the anti-theft plate if present. The cable housing end clip is removed, and the grommet from the front of the shift lever assembly is pried out to pull out the shift cable through the hole in the mount. If applicable, the carpeting may need to be pulled back to access the cable. The shift cable is disconnected from the shift lever by prying it with a flat-bladed screwdriver. After removing the grommet securing the cable to the firewall, the cable is taken out of the vehicle. Installation involves guiding the new cable through the hole in the floor, securing it with a grommet, connecting it to the shift lever, and adjusting it accordingly. For column shift models, the procedure starts similarly in the engine compartment by disconnecting the shift cable from the transaxle lever and removing the U-clip retainer to release the cable from the bracket. The lower sound insulator panel is removed from under the dash, and the cable end is disconnected from the shift control lever. The cable is then removed from the bracket by removing the U-clip retainer and squeezing the tangs on the cable housing. After pulling the cable through the hole in the firewall to the engine side, the installation process follows in reverse. Adjustment involves lifting the lock button tab on the cable using a screwdriver, positioning the shift lever and transaxle lever in the Neutral position, and then pushing the lock tab on the cable grommet assembly to lock the shift cable in place, ensuring proper operation of the shift lever and the engine's starting condition in Park or Neutral.
