The purpose of the EVAP system is to reduce evaporated hydrocarbons (fuel) from entering the atmosphere.

The Vapor Canister is designed to limit gasoline vapor discharge into the air when the vehicle is not operating. This system transfers fuel vapors from the fuel tank to a charcoal canister storage device, which absorbs and stores the vapors until they can be burned in the engine. When the engine is running, the fuel vapor is purged from the carbon element by intake airflow and consumed in the normal combustion process, facilitated by the EVAP purge solenoid valve. Issues such as poor idle, stalling, and poor driveability can be caused by split, cracked, or improperly connected hoses, a damaged canister, or a malfunctioning purge solenoid. Servicing the vapor canister is only necessary if it is clogged, cracked, or contains liquid fuel. If replacement is necessary, the canister must be replaced as a unit as it cannot be disassembled. The Vapor Emission Canister should be inspected for cracks, damage, or fuel leakage. If any of these conditions are found, the canister must be replaced. This involves tagging and detaching all hoses connected to the charcoal canister, unbolting the retaining bolts and removing the canister, installing the new canister and tightening the retaining bolts, and finally, reinstalling all hoses to the canister.
