Q:
How to perform frequent oil and Oil Filter changes as preventive maintenance procedures for Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
A:
Frequent oil changes are important preventive maintenance procedures that can be done by the home mechanic. As engine oil ages, it becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature engine wear. It is recommended to use a new oil filter every time the oil is changed, as the minimal cost and ease of installation make it a worthwhile investment. Before beginning the procedure, gather all necessary tools and materials, as well as clean rags and newspapers to clean up any spills. It is important to have access to the underside of the vehicle, either by lifting it on a hoist, driving it onto ramps, or supporting it with jackstands. Familiarize yourself with the locations of the oil drain plug and oil filter under the vehicle. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature and gather all necessary tools and oil. With the engine oil warm, raise and support the vehicle safely. Position the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug using a box-end wrench. Allow the old oil to drain into the pan, then wipe off the drain plug and reinstall it securely. Move the drain pan under the oil filter and use a filter wrench to loosen and completely unscrew the old filter. Remove any stuck rubber gasket from the engine and apply a light coat of oil to the gasket of the new filter. Partially fill the new filter with fresh oil and attach it to the engine following the tightening directions. Lower the vehicle and pour fresh oil through the filler opening in the engine compartment. Pour three quarts of oil into the engine, wait for it to drain into the pan, and check the level on the dipstick. Start the engine briefly and check for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter. Recheck the oil level and add more oil if necessary. During the first few trips after an oil change, check for leaks and proper oil level. Dispose of the old oil at an oil reclamation center, auto repair shop, or gas station.
