Q:
How to remove and install a manual or automatic transmission flywheel for Buick Century and Regal? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the manual transmission, matchmark the clutch cover and flywheel for reinstallation. Remove the flywheel by unscrewing the unevenly spaced bolts. If the ring gear needs replacement, drill a hole between two teeth and split the gear with a cold chisel. To install a new gear, polish spots on the ring, heat it until the polished spots turn blue, and place it against the flywheel shoulder. Allow the ring to cool and contract into place. Ensure the flywheel and crankshaft flange are free from burrs before installing the flywheel. For automatic transmission removal, detach the transmission and remove the six bolts attaching the flywheel to the crankshaft flange. Inspect the flywheel for cracks, wear, or broken teeth, and check the crankshaft flange and flywheel for burrs. Install the flywheel with the unevenly spaced bolt holes in the correct position and torque the bolts to specifications. Check flywheel run-out with a dial indicator and tap the high side with a mallet if necessary. If run-out exceeds the limit, remove the flywheel and check for burrs between it and the crankshaft mounting flange.

Q:
How to remove and inspect the flywheel/driveplate in a Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
A:
Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands, then remove the transaxle. If it is leaking, now is a good time to replace the front pump seal/o-ring for vehicles with an automatic transaxle. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc for vehicles with a manual transaxle. This is also a good time to check or replace the clutch components and pilot bearing. If there is no dowel pin, make some marks on the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft to ensure correct alignment during reinstallation. Remove the bolts that secure the flywheel/driveplate to the crankshaft. If the crankshaft turns, wedge a screwdriver through the openings in the driveplate for automatic transaxle or against the flywheel ring gear teeth for manual transaxle. Since the flywheel is fairly heavy, be sure to support it while removing the last bolt. Remove the flywheel/driveplate from the crankshaft. Clean the flywheel to remove grease and oil. Inspect the friction surface for cracks, rivet grooves, burned areas, and score marks. Light scoring can be removed with emery cloth. Check for cracked and broken ring gear teeth. Lay the flywheel on a flat surface and use a straightedge to check for warpage. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the flywheel/driveplate and the crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before reinstalling the flywheel/driveplate. Position the flywheel/driveplate against the crankshaft, ensuring to align the dowel or marks made during removal. Before installing the bolts, apply thread locking compound to the threads. Keep the flywheel/driveplate from turning as described above while you tighten the bolts. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
