Q:
What is the purpose of a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve for Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
A Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system is used to consume crankcase vapors in the combustion process instead of venting them to the atmosphere. In gasoline engines, small amounts of the combustion gas leak past the piston rings into the crankcase. These crankcase blow-by gases contain undesirable hydrocarbon air pollutants. The PCV system is used to prevent these vapors from escaping into the atmosphere while allowing proper ventilation of the crankcase to maintain good oil quality. The PCV system should be checked at every oil change and serviced every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). Never operate an engine without a PCV valve or a ventilation system, for it can become damaged. To remove and install the PCV valve, first locate the PCV valve; usually located either in the valve cover or in the intake manifold. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the positive crankcase ventilation valve. Remove the PCV valve from the PCV valve grommet. To install, insert the PCV valve into the grommet and connect the ventilation tube to the PCV valve.

Q:
How do you replace a PCV valve for Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
A:
The PCV valve can usually be found pushed into one of the rocker arm covers on the side of the engine, with a hose connected to the valve which runs to either the carburetor or the intake manifold. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve, it's important to ensure it is for your particular vehicle, model year, and engine size. To replace it, pull the valve (with the hose attached) from its rubber grommet in the rocker arm cover. Using pliers or a screwdriver, depending on the type of clamp, loosen the clamp at the end of the hose and move the clamp upwards on the PCV hose. Then, pull the PCV valve from the end of the hose, noting its installed position and direction. Compare the old valve with the new one to make sure they are the same. Push the new valve into the end of the hose until it is fully seated. Move the hose clamp down the hose and tighten the clamp securely around the end of the hose. Inspect the rubber grommet in the cover for damage and replace it with a new one if faulty. Finally, push the PCV valve and hose securely into the rocker arm cover. More information on the PCV system can be found elsewhere.

Q:
How do I check and replace the PCV valve in my Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
With the engine idling at normal operating temperature, pull the valve (with hose attached) out of the rubber grommet in the valve cover. On V6 engines, the PCV valve is located in the valve cover. To check it, pull it out and feel for suction and shake it to make sure it rattles. Place your finger over the end of the valve. If there is no vacuum at the valve, check for a plugged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself. Replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Turn off the engine and shake the PCV valve, listening for a rattle. If the valve doesn't rattle, replace it with a new one. To replace the valve, pull it out of the end of the hose, noting its installed position and direction. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve, make sure it's for your particular vehicle, model year and engine size. Compare the old valve with the new one to make sure they are the same. Push the valve into the end of the hose until it's seated. Inspect the rubber grommet for damage and replace it with a new one if necessary. Finally, push the PCV valve and hose securely into position in the valve cover.
