Q:
How to remove and inspect pistons in an engine? Posted by Customer
A:
Before removing the pistons, inspect the cylinder bore for a ridge, which can be felt by hand. Use a ridge reamer to carefully remove it. To begin piston removal, mark and match each connecting rod cap to its respective connecting rod. Place rubber hose over connecting rod studs to protect the crankshaft and cylinders. Lubricate the cylinder wall with clean engine oil and gently tap the piston out using a wooden dowel. Repeat this process for all pistons. After removal, clean the cylinder bore and pistons thoroughly with soap and water, then apply clean engine oil to prevent corrosion. Remove the piston rings using a ring expander tool and clean the piston grooves. Measure cylinder bore diameter and piston clearance with a telescopic gauge and micrometer. Mark the pistons for reference. Pistons with pressed-in wrist pins require special tools for removal, while snap-ringed pins can be removed with a screwdriver. Replace or install wrist pins as needed. When installing new rings, use a piston ring expander to avoid damage. Properly position the rings on the pistons following the manufacturer's instructions. Inspect and replace connecting rod bearings if necessary. Check bearing clearance using Plastigage®. If clearance is excessive, select the correct undersized bearing shell. Install the bearings, pistons, and connecting rods according to manufacturer specifications, and ensure proper side clearance between the rods and crankshaft. Finally, reassemble the engine components, such as the oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head(s), and intake manifold.
