To remove and install the water pump on 4.5L and 4.9L engines, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the engine coolant. Remove the air filter assembly and the coolant recovery tank. Disconnect and remove the cross brace. Then, remove the water pump pulley bolts, the serpentine drive belt, and the water pump pulley. Finally, remove the water pump-to-engine bolts and the pump. To install the new water pump, clean the gasket mounting surfaces and place a new gasket over the water pump studs. Install the water pump and tighten the bolts according to the specified torque values. Install the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts. Reinstall the cross brace, coolant recovery tank, air filter assembly, and negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system with coolant and check for leaks. For the 4.6L engine, the process is similar but with some additional steps. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine coolant. Remove the air cleaner assembly, water pump drive belt, lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing, and water pump bypass hose from the coolant crossover assembly. Remove the water pump cover and use a water pump removal tool to remove the water pump from the housing. Clean the mating surfaces and install a new O-ring in the coolant crossover housing. Install the new water pump and lock it into place. Install a new O-ring in the water pump cover and install the cover, tightening the bolts. Finally, reinstall all the engine components in the reverse order of removal and refill the cooling system.
