Q:
How do you replace the water pump for Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the water pump, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the radiator. Remove the fan and spacer (if applicable) by removing the fan bolts from the water pump hub, ensuring a thermostatic fan clutch remains in the in-car position. Next, take out the bolts securing the radiator shroud to the radiator and lift the shroud out of the engine compartment. Loosen the two mounting bolts for the alternator, which includes an adjusting strap bolt in a slotted bracket and a long pivot bolt under the alternator. Push the alternator inward to release tension on the drive belt, then remove the drive belt from the alternator and water pump pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley from the hub. Fully remove the alternator strap bolt, pivot the alternator away from the water pump, and remove the alternator mounting bracket, secured at the thermostat housing on the top of the engine with one of the water pump bolts. Disconnect the wiring at the rear of the alternator, using identifying tape if needed for reinstallation. Remove the alternator pivot bolt and lift the alternator off the engine. Loosen the two mounting bolts for the air pump and remove the bracket attached to the water pump. Pivot the air pump away from the engine, and if necessary, remove the air pump pulley to access the bracket bolts. If equipped with power steering, loosen the adjusting bolt and fully remove the pivot bolt passing through the water pump, swinging the pump away from the engine without damaging the hoses. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose, and bypass hose (if present) from the water pump housing. Remove the remaining bolts securing the water pump to the front of the engine block, lift the water pump out of the engine compartment, and transfer the heater hose fitting from the old pump to the new one if installing a new or rebuilt water pump. Clean the engine's gasket surfaces, apply a thin coat of gasket sealer to the new gaskets, and install them onto the new pump. Place the pump in position on the engine and secure it with bolts, but avoid torque-tightening until the power steering pump bracket and air pump brackets are reinstalled, as these brackets use the water pump bolts for attachment. Proceed to install the engine components in the reverse order of removal, tightening the appropriate fasteners to torque specifications, and adjust all drive belts to the proper tension. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable, fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water, start the engine, and allow it to idle until the upper radiator hose becomes hot. Check for leaks and, with the engine hot, add more coolant mixture until it reaches the bottom of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap and monitor the coolant level during the first few miles of driving.

How to replace a water pump in a Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the radiator. Remove the bolts securing the fan to the water pump hub and remove the fan and spacer. Remove the bolts securing the radiator shroud to the radiator and lift the shroud out of the engine compartment. Loosen the mounting bolts for the alternator and remove the drive belt from the alternator and water pump pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley from the hub. Remove the alternator by pushing it inward to relieve tension on the drive belt and then removing the alternator strap bolt and pivot bolt. Disconnect the wiring at the rear of the alternator. Loosen the mounting bolts for the AIR pump and pivot the AIR pump away from the engine. If equipped with power steering, loosen the adjusting bolt and remove the pivot bolt to swing the power steering pump away from the engine. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose, and bypass hose from the water pump housing. Remove the remaining bolts securing the water pump to the engine block and lift the water pump out of the engine compartment. If installing a new water pump, transfer the heater hose fitting from the old pump to the new one. Clean the gasket surfaces of the engine and apply a thin coat of gasket sealer to the new gaskets. Install the new pump and secure with bolts. Install the engine components in reverse order, tightening the appropriate fasteners. Adjust all drive belts to the proper tension. Connect the negative battery cable and fill the radiator with a mixture of antifreeze and water. Start the engine and check for leaks. Fill with more coolant mixture as needed.

Q:
What are the ways to check the operation of the water pump while it is still installed on the engine for Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating as the pump will not be able to circulate cooled water through the engine. There are three ways in which to check the operation of the water pump while it is still installed on the engine. If the pump is suspect, it should be replaced with a new or factory-rebuilt unit. With the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature, squeeze the upper radiator hose. If the water pump is working properly, a pressure surge should be felt as the hose is released. Water pumps are equipped with 'weep' or vent holes. If a failure occurs to the bladder of the pump, small amounts of water will leak from these 'weep' holes. In most cases, it will be necessary to use a flashlight from under the car to see evidence of leakage from this point in the pump body. If the water pump shaft bearings fail there may be a squealing sound at the front of the engine while it is running. Shaft wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is forced up and down. Do not mistake drive belt slippage, which also causes a squealing sound, for water pump failure.
