- A:To remove and install the rack and pinion assembly on various Cadillac models, start by raising and supporting the vehicle. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. Disconnect the lower connection of the intermediate shaft, making sure to follow the cautionary instructions to avoid damage. Disconnect both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Remove the line retainer and disconnect the outlet and pressure lines. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and slide out the assembly. To install, position the rack and pinion assembly and tighten the mounting bolts. Connect the outlet and pressure lines and tighten the fittings. Install the line retainer and connect the tie rod ends. Connect the intermediate shaft coupling and tighten the bolt. Install the wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
