The inspection process for the steering linkage involves checking the play in the system by wiggling the wheel and measuring the dial indicator reading, as well as testing the idler arm for excessive play. Torn ball stud boots, frozen joints, and bent or damaged components should also be checked. To remove the tie-rod, the wheel lug nuts are loosened, the vehicle is raised and supported, and the tie-rod end is separated from the steering knuckle and relay rod. If replacement is necessary, the distance from the adjuster tube to the ball stud should be measured and recorded before unscrewing the tie-rod end. The new tie-rod end is lubricated and screwed into the adjuster tube, and the inner tie-rod end is inserted into the relay rod and secured with a nut. The outer tie-rod end is connected to the steering knuckle and tightened with a castellated nut. The clamp nuts are then tightened, and the wheel is installed and the vehicle lowered. The idler arm can be removed by loosening the nut and using a two jaw puller to separate it from the relay rod. The idler arm-to-frame bolts are then removed. To install the idler arm, it is positioned on the frame and the bolts are tightened, and the idler arm ball stud is inserted into the relay rod and secured with a nut. The relay rod can be removed by separating the inner tie-rod ends and idler arms from it, and the connecting rod can be removed by separating the ball stud from the relay rod and Pitman arm. The installation process for both the relay rod and connecting rod is the reverse of the removal procedure, with all nuts tightened to the specified torque.
