Q:
What is the coolant temperature indicator system and Coolant Temperature Sensor and how does it work on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
The coolant temperature indicator system is composed of a temperature gauge mounted in the dash and a coolant temperature sensor (also known as the Coolant Temperature Sensor mounted on the engine. This coolant temperature sensor doubles as an information sensor for the fuel and emissions systems. If an overheating indication occurs, the coolant level in the system should be checked. The operation of the coolant temperature sensor (Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit) should also be checked. If the sensor (Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit) is defective, it should be replaced with a new one. If the coolant temperature sensor (Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit) is good, the temperature gauge should be checked by a dealer service department. This test will require a scan tool to access the information as it is processed by the onboard computer.

Q:
How do I remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor on Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe,GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali and Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
Drain the cooling system to a level that's below the level of the ECT sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor. Unscrew and remove the ECT sensor. If you're installing the old sensor, wrap the threads of the new ECT sensor with Teflon tape. The threads of a new sensor should already be coated with sealant. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the ECT sensor to the torque specifications. Refill the cooling system.
