- A:The VSS is located on the right side of the extension housing on 4L60-E and 4L65-E transmissions. The VSS is not used on 4L80-E and 4L85-E transmissions, both of which are instead equipped with an Input Shaft Speed (JSS) and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Place a drain pan under the VSS to catch any spilled transmission fluid. Disconnect the electrical connector from the VSS. To remove the VSS, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sensor mounting bolt. Remove the VSS mounting bolt and remove the VSS from the transmission. If the VSS is difficult to remove, grasp it firmly and wiggle it from side-to-side while working it out of the transmission. If the VSS is equipped with an O-ring, remove the O-ring and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration. If the O-ring is damaged, replace it. If you're going to install a new VSS, replace the O-ring even if the old O-ring looks okay. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the level of the transmission fluid and refill as necessary.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
