- Q:How to test and replace the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
- A:The Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor is a thermistor that measures the temperature of the air entering the engine. It has a high resistance at low temperatures and a low resistance at high temperatures. The PCM supplies a 5 volt signal to the sensor and measures the voltage to calculate the incoming air temperature. The IMT sensor signal is used to adjust spark timing based on air density. To test the sensor, connect a digital ohmmeter and compare the resistance to the ambient air temperature. Heat the sensor slightly and observe the temperature and resistance. If the sensor does not meet specifications, it should be replaced. To remove the sensor, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the intake manifold cover. For a 4.6L engine, remove the IMT sensor from the fuel rail. For a 4.9L engine, unscrew the IMT sensor from the intake manifold. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring to coat the threads with a nonhardening sealant before installing the sensor.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
