Q:
How do you remove and install the Transmission Assembly? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install the 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxle, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the air cleaner assembly, followed by the exhaust crossover pipe. Disconnect the shift linkage, shift cable, and bracket, and label and detach the electrical connectors for the converter clutch, cruise control servo, and neutral safety switch. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts and studs, disconnect the vacuum line at the vacuum modulator, and support the engine with an engine support tool. Raise and safely support the vehicle, remove the front wheel and tire assemblies, disconnect both ball joints from the steering knuckles, and remove the half shafts from the transaxle. Remove the stabilizer bolt and clamp, the left engine and A/C splash shields, and the wire harness cover. Remove the vacuum pump assembly, the left front engine and transaxle mount-to-cradle attachments, and the left No. 1 cradle insulator bolt and cradle assembly. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and bracket, and remove the transaxle-to-engine support bracket. Remove the right rear mount-to-transaxle bracket and the left rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle attachments. Remove the flexplate splash shields and torque converter-to-flexplate bolts. Position a suitable jack under the transaxle and remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts, working through the right wheel well to access one of them. Finally, remove the transaxle from the vehicle. To install, position the transaxle and install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts/studs, followed by the torque converter-to-flexplate bolts and flexplate splash shields. Connect the oil cooler lines and bracket, install the right and left rear transaxle mount attachments, and the transaxle-to-engine support bracket. Then, install the left No. 1 cradle insulator bolt and cradle assembly, and reconnect the vacuum pump assembly. Proceed to reconnect the left engine and A/C splash shields, wire harness cover, and stabilizer bolt and clamp. Install the half shafts, reconnect the lower ball joints and tie rod ends, and connect both front suspension position sensors. Install the power steering filter, ABS modulator, engine oil pan-to-transaxle bracket, and the transmission mount nuts. Align the flexplate and torque converter, and install the flexplate-to-converter bolts and torque converter cover. Reattach the shift control cable and bracket to the transaxle, and adjust as necessary. Install the exhaust crossover pipe, reconnect the throttle valve cable and bracket, and reinstall the air cleaner assembly. Fill the transaxle with the proper fluid and adjust the throttle valve cable and shift linkage. Road test the vehicle for proper operation. For the 4T80-E transaxle, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the headlight housing upper filler panel and diagonal brace, and the air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the shift control cable and bracket at the transaxle, and remove the torque struts. Disconnect the oil cooler lines at the cooler and the oil sending line at the transaxle. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts, and support the engine with an engine support fixture. Raise and safely support the vehicle, and remove the splash shields from both front wheel wells. Disconnect both front suspension position sensors, and remove both stabilizer links from the struts. Remove the tie rod end cotter pins and nuts, followed by the lower ball joint cotter pins and nuts. Remove the halfshafts, power steering filter, and A/C splash shield from the frame. Remove the ABS modulator and engine oil pan-to-transaxle bracket, then the torque converter cover and torque converter-to-flexplate bolts. Position a suitable jack under the transaxle, and remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts. Finally, remove the transaxle from the vehicle. To install, begin by positioning the transaxle in the vehicle and installing the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Reinstall the torque converter-to-flexplate bolts and torque converter cover, and connect the oil cooler lines. Install the right and left rear transaxle mount attachments, and the transaxle-to-engine support bracket. Reattach the power steering hose to the auxiliary cooler, and connect the electrical harness and connector to the front of the cradle. Support the rear of the cradle with a suitable jack, and remove the 4 rear cradle bolts. Lower the jack slightly to access the power steering gear heat shield and return line fitting, remove the heat shield, and disconnect the return line. Plug the line and gear opening. Detach the power steering electrical connector, and raise the jack to reinstall one rear cradle bolt on each side finger-tight. Remove the jack, and support the frame with another suitable jack, removing the 6 frame mount bolts. Lower the frame or raise the vehicle with the steering gear attached. Label and detach electrical connectors from the transaxle, vehicle speed sensor, and ground, and remove the transaxle harness from the transaxle clip. Remove the fuel line bundle from the transaxle, and the left and right transaxle mount and bracket from the transaxle. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack, and remove the engine-to-transaxle heat shield and bracket, and the remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Lower the transaxle, and remove the manual shift linkage, neutral safety switch, vehicle speed sensor, and oil return line. To adjust the throttle linkage, ensure the cable slider is in the fully retracted position, and depress the adjust tab at the engine end of the TV cable. Move the slider to the fitting, release the tab, and rotate the throttle lever to the full travel position. The slider should move towards the lever when it's fully opened. Adjustments to transaxle adapt parameters and the transaxle oil life indicator should be made following specific procedures.
