Q:
How to remove and install rocker arms on various engines? Posted by Customer
A:
For 305 and 350 Chevrolet and 301 Pontiac engines, start by removing the valve covers. Then, remove the rocker arm nut and ball, and lift the rocker arm off the rocker stud. Make sure to keep the rocker arm assemblies together and assemble them on the same stud. Next, remove the pushrod from the bore, ensuring that the rods are returned to their original bores with the same end in the block. To install, reverse the removal procedure and tighten the rocker ball retaining nut to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) on Pontiac engines. For Chevrolet engines, start the nut onto the stud and adjust the valves accordingly. For 263 (Diesel), 307, 350 (Gas and Diesel), and 403 Oldsmobile engines, begin by removing the valve covers. The rocker arms are removed in pairs for each cylinder by removing the two bolts that attach the rocker arm pivot to the cylinder head. Repeat this procedure for each pair of rocker arms, keeping them in order for proper reassembly. To install the rocker arms, ensure that the lifters are off the cam lobe and that the valves are closed. Attach a remote starter to the engine or have an assistant bump the engine over until the valves are closed for each cylinder. With the valves closed, install the paired rocker arms, lubricating all pivot and rocker arm wear points with white grease before installation. Finally, tighten the retaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) and reinstall the valve covers with new gaskets.
