Q:
How do you remove and install front hub and bearing assembly on a Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
First, break the hub nut loose. Then, raise the front of the car and support it on jackstands. Remove the front wheel and the disc brake caliper, noting that it is not necessary to disconnect the brake line. Proceed to remove the brake rotor and the hub nut. Remove the hub and bearing assembly attaching bolts. If the old assembly is to be reinstalled, mark the attaching bolts so they can be installed in the same holes from which they were removed. Use a GM special tool or equivalent puller to remove the hub and bearing assembly from the drive axle. Spin the bearing with your finger and check for any roughness or noise. Also, check the bearing mating surfaces and steering knuckle bore for dirt or nicks. This assembly is a sealed unit and if the bearing needs replacing, the entire hub and bearing assembly must be replaced. If the hub and bearing assembly is being replaced, a new steering knuckle seal must be installed in the steering knuckle prior to installation of the hub and bearing assembly. This is done by applying grease to the seal and its bore in the steering knuckle and then tapping the seal into place using a hammer and the proper sized socket. Install the hub and bearing assembly onto the axleshaft. Then install the hub nut onto the axleshaft and tighten it until the hub and bearing assembly is seated. Install the shield and hub assembly attaching bolts, torquing them to specs. Install the rotor on the hub flange. Install the brake caliper. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground. Finally, torque the hub nut to specs.
