- A:The power brake booster unit requires no special maintenance apart from periodic inspection of the vacuum hose and the case. Disassembly of the power unit requires special tools, so if a problem develops, it is recommended to install a new or factory-rebuilt unit. To remove the power brake booster, start by removing the nuts attaching the master cylinder to the booster in the engine compartment, being careful not to bend or kink the brake lines. Then, disconnect the vacuum hose from the power brake booster and remove the clip to disconnect the power brake pushrod from the top of the brake pedal in the passenger compartment. Next, remove the nuts attaching the booster to the firewall and carefully lift the booster unit away from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. To install the booster, place it into position and tighten the retaining nuts, then connect the brake pedal. Install the master cylinder and vacuum hose. Finally, test the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal operation.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
