To perform CV joint maintenance, follow these steps. Begin by removing the drive axle. If the drive axle features a CV Boot, cut off the clamps and slide it over the outer CV joint. Then, place the drive axle in a safe location lined with rags to prevent shaft damage. For the inner CV joint, cut off the boot seal retaining clamps and slide the boot towards the axle's center, marking the tripod housing and drive axle for reinstallation alignment. Remove the spider assembly from the axle by removing the inner retaining ring and sliding it back to expose the outer retaining ring. Remove the outer retaining ring and slide the joint off the drive axle. For both inner and outer CV joints, use tape or a cloth to secure the spider bearing assembly during removal and installation. Clean and inspect components, replacing worn or damaged parts, and apply CV joint grease as needed. Reassemble the spider assembly, then the tri-pot housing, and adjust the collapsed joint dimension. Install retaining clamps and the drive axle. Finally, install the CV Boot if applicable and tighten clamps similarly. For the outer CV joint, dislodge and remove the seal retaining ring by lightly tapping around its circumference, being careful not to deform it. Cut off the boot-to-shaft band and remove the snap-ring before sliding the joint assembly off. Pack the assembly with grease, install the boot, apply grease to the inside, position the CV joint on the drive axle, and secure the boot and seal retainer with clamps.
