Q:
What does the throttle valve cable control on these transmissions? Posted by Customer
A:
The throttle valve cable used on these transmissions is not just a "downshift" cable, as it controls various aspects of the transmission's operation. It regulates line pressure, shift points, shift feel, part throttle downshifts, and detent downshifts. If the TV cable is broken, sticky, misadjusted, or the wrong part, the vehicle will experience several problems. To inspect the cable, remove the engine cover and have the engine running at idle speed with the selector lever in Neutral. Set the parking brake and block the wheels for safety. With an assistant applying the brake pedal, grab the inner cable a few inches behind where it attaches to the throttle linkage and pull it forward. It should slide smoothly through the cable housing without any binding or jerky operation. When released, it should return to its original location with the cable slop against the cable terminal. If the TV cable does not operate as described, it is likely due to a defective or misadjusted cable or damaged components at either end. To adjust the cable, the engine should not be running. Depress the re-adjust tab and move the slider back through the fitting away from the throttle linkage until it stops against the fitting. Release the re-adjust tab and turn the throttle lever to the "wide open throttle" position, which will automatically adjust the cable. After adjustment, check for proper operation.
