- Q:How do you remove the shift cable for the 1988 Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
- A:To remove the shift cable, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Under the vehicle, pry the cable end from the transmission control lever stud and remove the cable from the clip on the transmission oil pan. Remove the cable clips securing the cable to the body and the metal U-clip from the shift cable housing. Compress the locking tabs and pull the cable out of the bracket. Push the cable grommet out of the floorpan. Inside the vehicle, remove the driver's side knee bolster and lower steering column cover. Pry the cable end from the shift lever at the steering column and remove the metal U-clip from the cable housing at the bracket on the steering column. Working under the vehicle, remove the shift cable.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
