The case halves can be separated by inserting screwdrivers into the case ends' slots and prying them apart, taking care not to damage the oil pump in the rear case half.

Removal begins with disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, then raising the vehicle and supporting it securely on jackstands. The skid plate is removed if equipped, and the transfer case lubricant is drained. The front driveshaft and the left strut rod are removed, followed by the rear driveshaft. All electrical connectors from the transfer case are unplugged, and the shift linkage is disconnected. The exhaust system is removed if necessary for clearance. The transmission is supported with a jack or jackstand, and should remain supported at all times while the transfer case is out of the vehicle. The transfer case is supported with a jack, preferably a special jack made for this purpose. Safety chains will help steady the transfer case on the jack. The bolts securing the transmission to the transfer case are removed, ensuring not to lose the lock washers. A final check is made that all wires and hoses have been disconnected from the transfer case, then the transfer case and jack are moved toward the rear of the vehicle until the transfer case is clear of the transmission. The transfer case is kept level as this is done. Once the input shaft is clear, the transfer case is lowered and removed from under the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, with the transfer case-to-transmission bolts tightened to the specified torque.
