All V6 and some four-cylinder engines are equipped with thermostatically controlled fan clutches. To check the fan clutch, start the engine when it is lukewarm and let it run for two minutes. For safety purposes, remove the key from the ignition switch. Turn the fan blades and note the resistance, which should be moderate depending on the temperature. Drive the vehicle until the engine is warmed up, then shut it off and remove the key. Turn the fan blades again and there should be a noticeable increase in resistance. If the fan clutch fails this check or is locked up solid, it needs to be replaced. Additionally, if excess fluid is leaking from the hub or there is lateral play over 1/4-inch, the fan clutch should be replaced. If any fan blades are bent, it is important not to straighten them as it could weaken the metal and cause the blades to fly off during engine operation. Instead, replace the fan with a new one. The removal process for 1995 and earlier models involves removing the hood latch mechanism, detaching any hoses or wiring attached to the upper fan shroud, removing the drive belt(s), and removing the fasteners securing the fan assembly to the water pump pulley. For 1996 and later models, the removal process includes removing the air cleaner intake duct, detaching hoses or wiring attached to the upper fan shroud, using a large wrench to remove the clutch retaining nut and detach the fan clutch assembly from the engine, and removing the fasteners securing the fan to the fan clutch. The installation process for all models is the reverse of removal, with all fasteners tightened to the torque specifications.
