Q:
How to remove and replace the ignition coil pack in a Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION? Posted by Customer
A:
Make sure that the ignition key is turned to OFF for 2006 and earlier 2.2L models. Remove the intake manifold cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition control module. It is not necessary to remove the ignition control module from the ignition coil pack in order to remove the coil pack assembly, which is something you must do to remove the valve cover or to service the cylinder head components. However, if you are going to replace the ignition coil pack, you will have to remove the ignition control module in order to remove the cover from the ignition coil pack. Remove the four ignition coil pack mounting bolts. Pull the ignition coil pack straight up, detaching the spark plug boots. If you are replacing the ignition coil pack, remove the cover and install it on the new coil pack. If you are replacing the ignition coil pack, remove the four boots from the coil pack and inspect them for cracks, tears, and deterioration. If any of the boots are damaged, replace them. Before installing the boots on the ignition coil pack, coat the interior of each boot with silicone dielectric compound. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Tighten the ignition coil pack mounting bolts. For all other models, make sure that the ignition key is turned to OFF. Remove the engine cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the individual ignition coils. Remove the coil mounting bolt(s) and pull the coil(s) from the valve cover. Before installing the coil(s), it is a good idea to coat the interior of each boot with silicone dielectric compound. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Tighten the ignition coil mounting bolt(s).

Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the ignition coil pack mounting bolts to the specified torque. V6 MODELS: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil pack. Disconnect the rubber intake boots and remove the intake runners for the front or rear cylinder head. Remove the ignition coil pack mounting bolts. Remove the ignition coil pack assembly. If replacing the ignition coil pack, remove the cover and install it on the new coil pack. Inspect the three boots for cracks, tears, and deterioration. Coat the interior of each boot with silicone dielectric compound before installing them on the ignition coil pack.
