Have the system discharged. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Caution: On models equipped with the Theftlock audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. On 2002 models, remove the cross-beam in the engine compartment. Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right lower splash shield. Remove the drivebelt and oil filter, if necessary for clearance. Remove the engine torque strut and bracket on the 3.4 liter. Remove the cooling fan assembly on the 3.4 liter and the 3800. Disconnect the compressor clutch wiring harness. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the rear of the compressor. Plug the open fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture. Unbolt the compressor from the mounting brackets and lift it out of the vehicle. If a new compressor is being installed, follow the directions with the compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation. The clutch may have to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace all O-rings with new ones specifically made for the air conditioning system in your car and lubricate them with the appropriate refrigerant oil. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
