To remove the wheel cylinder, start by blocking the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Then, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts and raise the rear of the vehicle, supporting it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and proceed to remove the brake shoes. Alternatively, you can spread the top portion of the brake shoes apart enough to remove the wheel cylinder instead of removing the brake shoes entirely. Make sure to remove any dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the brake line fitting at the rear of the backing plate using a flare-nut wrench, if available, but be careful not to pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Next, remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and detach the wheel cylinder from the backing plate, ensuring that any sealant on the backing plate is also removed. To install the wheel cylinder, position it correctly and connect the brake line fitting finger tight. Then, install the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque. Make sure to tighten the brake line fitting securely. If the brake shoes were removed, reinstall them. Put the brake drum on the hub flange and install the wheel and lug nuts. Bleed the brake system and lower the vehicle to the ground. Finally, tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque and thoroughly check the operation of the brakes before driving the vehicle in traffic.
