Ignition systems have evolved significantly since the introduction of vehicles. Modern vehicles predominantly use coil packs instead of distributors, eliminating the need for distributor caps or rotors. Camshaft and crankshaft sensors have replaced these items. Timing is now largely controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), making it non-adjustable. However, for vehicles still operating with a distributor cap and rotor, some basic information is provided. A physical inspection of the distributor cap and rotor should coincide with the checking of the plug wires. Look for signs of damage on the distributor cap, such as a broken tower, a crack in the body, or external carbon tracks. Using a bright light, inspect the inside of the cap for charred or eroded terminals and carbon tracks. Check the rotor button and the inside terminals for damage. Damaged or cut terminals could indicate improper installation or wear and tear on the distributor housing. To remove and install the distributor cap and rotor, disconnect the negative battery cable and record wire placement. Depress and rotate the two retaining screws counterclockwise in the cap 180 degrees to disengage from the distributor housing. Remove the cap to expose the ignition rotor. Remove the two hold down screws retaining the rotor to the distributor shaft, noting the position of the rotor before removal. To install the rotor, align it to the distributor shaft. Ensure the rotor is properly aligned and seats snugly and level on the distributor shaft. Seat the distributor cap onto the distributor housing, ensuring proper alignment. Depress and rotate the cap screws clockwise 180 degrees to secure the cap in place.
