The air filter should be replaced with a new one at specified intervals and inspected between changes. For 2.5 liter four-cylinder and 2.8 liter V6 engines, the air filter is located inside the air cleaner housing at the front of the engine, near the battery. It can be removed by first removing the wingnut, lifting off the cover and spark arrestor (if equipped), and then lifting the filter out. For 3.1 liter V6 turbocharged models, detach the clips, remove the PCV breather from the valve cover, lift the air cleaner housing off, and then remove the filter from the housing. For non-turbocharged models, remove the bolts, lift the upper air cleaner housing off, and then lift the filter element out. For 3.4 liter V6, 3800 V6, 3100 V6, and 2.3 liter four-cylinder (Quad-4) engines, the air cleaner housing is located on the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment. Loosen or remove the nuts or retainer clips, lift the top cover off, and withdraw the filter. While the filter housing cover is off, be careful not to drop anything down into the throttle body or air cleaner assembly. Wipe out the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean rag. Place the new filter in the air cleaner housing, making sure it seats properly in the bottom of the housing. Install the top plate or cover. Some 2.5L models are equipped with a PCV filter, usually located in a holder on the side of the filter housing. It can be removed after disconnecting the hose and removing the clip. Pull the PCV filter out of the holder. Install the PCV filter in the holder and attach it to the air cleaner housing. Then install the air filter.
