To remove the alternator, start by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On models with the Theftlock audio system, ensure the lockout feature is turned off. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator. Loosen the adjustment and pivots or rotate the drivebelt tensioner to remove the drivebelt, depending on the model. Remove the alternator support brackets if equipped, then remove the alternator mounting bolts. For the 3.4 liter V6 engine, additional steps are required. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly, detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, and remove the coolant recovery tank. Remove the drivebelt, loosen the wheel lug nuts and right-side driveaxle/hub nut, and raise the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels and under-vehicle splash shield, as well as the right inner fender splash shield. Remove the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter, followed by the right driveaxle and driveaxle shield. Remove the steering gear heat shield and unplug the electrical connector from the knock sensor. If equipped, remove the alternator cooling duct. Remove the alternator rear brace bolt and nut, and unscrew the nut to detach the power steering line from the alternator upper mounting stud. Detach the electrical connector and battery terminal from the rear of the alternator. Unscrew the alternator lower mounting bolt and unscrew the upper mounting bolt/stud to remove the alternator. When replacing the alternator, ensure the new/rebuilt unit is identical to the old one in terms of terminals and identification numbers. If necessary, switch the pulley from the old unit to the new/rebuilt one. Installation is the reverse of removal, and after installation, adjust the drive belt tension and check the charging voltage. When working on the starting system, always detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Exercise caution with excessive cranking of the starter motor to prevent overheating. The starter is directly connected to the battery and mishandling it can cause arcing or fire.
