The oil pump and screen can be accessed by removing the oil pan. It is important to clean and inspect the gears for any defects. For 1981-87 engines, wear specifications are provided for the oil pump gears. Gear tip wear can be measured by passing a narrow feeler gauge between the oil pump housing wall and the tips of the gear teeth. The oil pressure relief valve should also be checked for wear or scoring. Lubricating the relief valve and spring with clean engine oil, they can be placed back in the cover.
